The report of the Pissarides committee proposes:

Implementation of an integrated plan to improve the knowledge and awareness of citizens on waste matters but also to strengthen private entrepreneurship

PARTIALLY IMPLEMENTED

Evaluation

According to the National Waste Management Plan 2020-2030 of the Ministry of of Environment and Energy, the relevant measures provide for the awareness of citizens and the strengthening of confidence in recycling. In addition to the development of the relevant infrastructure equipment that will facilitate separate collection, a holistic approach is proposed to raise awareness and inform citizens about the environmental and economic importance of recycling and diverting waste from landfill, with the ultimate goal of adopting of the principles of the Circular Economy. Public opinion surveys reveal a lack of trust and credibility. Special emphasis will be placed on special campaigns at younger ages, such as in schools. Awareness campaigns and specific measures (such as the collection of waste from the alternative management systems themselves, the upgrading of the Recyclable Materials Sorting Centers and their network) will contribute to strengthening the separate collection of waste.

Waste prevention actions are strengthened through integrated information and awareness programs for citizens, while at the same time incentives and disincentives are established for waste producers, direct and indirect, such as for citizens, for businesses and for local authorities. Particular emphasis is placed on single-use plastic products as well as food, while promoting the perception that waste is a resource to be utilized in the wider context of the Circular Economy.

Raising awareness of institutions, businesses and consumers about the environmental impact of the use of certain plastics and information about prevention and good management practices.

The relevant awareness campaigns (We reduce waste, give space to life Practical advice for less waste in the Municipality) have already been carried out.

Therefore, the proposal is assessed as partially implemented, as private entrepreneurship does not seem to be strengthened at the same time.
